Tips On How To Blog Anonymously And Safely
Thu Jun 08, 2006 at 07:50:50 AM PDT
[UPDATE: (Because I did not intend to make peeder's life miserable) Please understand that this diary was intended to give people the information they need to make a balanced decision of how much privacy and anonymity is appropriate for thier particular circumstances. If your dKos user ID hasn't caused you problems in the past, it probably won't cause you problems in the future. For the overwhelming majority of users, there is no need to e-mail peeder to try and change your user ID.]
In light of the impending loss of one of our best bloggers, I think it may be a good time to offer some tips on protecting your online anonymity. Keep in mind that these are not foolproof. If you are looking for a 100% absolute way to protect your internet privacy I can think of only one, reach over and disconnect your computer from the wall. Abstinence, as our Republican friends would surely remind us, is the only sure-fire way to protect yourself.
For those of us that are not willing to go to that extreme, I offer a privacy "condom" below the fold.
Please Help Our Republican Friends
Mon Feb 13, 2006 at 04:00:58 AM PDT
I may have finally discovered what is wrong with Republicans. They can't help it, they have been infected with parasites that are controlling thier minds.
According to this article on Yahoo News titled "Mind Control by Parasites"
Half of the world's human population is infected with Toxoplasma, parasites in the body - and the brain.
Hmmm... Half? That sounds about right numberwise.
Apparently, Toxoplasma gondii, which is a common parasite found in cats, has been found by researchers to be capable of altering the mind.
Don't Trust Heather Wilson on NSA spying
Thu Feb 09, 2006 at 04:21:07 AM PDT
I have seen a couple of stories about Heather Wilson (R, NM-01) of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence possibly "breaking ranks" with the White House on the issue of NSA domestic spying. There was
this story in the NY Times. Josh Marshall's
Talking Points Memo mentioned it
here. I also saw a brief mention on the midday open thread
here by Kos.
The two most common beliefs seem to be that (1)she may be taking a principled stand, or (2)she is gauging the political winds in her district and is doing this for re-election purposes.
Well, one of those may very well be the reason. But I would just like to caution us to not be so willing to take this at face value. She has an R after her name, and for that reason alone I don't trust her. Jump below to read what I believe may really be going on here.
We Have Not Yet Begun To Fight
Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 10:16:58 PM PDT
And so, the battle was joined, and to our great regret, we have failed to secure the victory.
We brought the battle directly to one of our enemy's greatest strongholds. Our troops fought with the valiant strength that can only be summoned by those who are driven by the righteousness of their beliefs. We salute these heroes, and assure them that their noble efforts shall not have been in vain. In their honor we must re-dedicate ourselves to their just and noble cause. And we pledge that although the battle may go against us at times, we can not and will not give up the fight, for this is a war where the principles of our great nation are at stake.
Sadly, just as it appeared that victory was within our grasp today, some of our commanders ignored the orders to stand their ground, choosing instead to retreat to safety. Be assured, the cowardly and shameful actions of these commanders will not be forgotten.

A ROUGH ROAD LEADS TO THE STARS

Today marks the 20th anniversay of the space shuttle Challenger disaster, where seven brave men and women lost thier lives in the pursuit of our dreams.
While this diary is posted in thier honor, it isn't really about them. It's about the hopes and dreams of a little boy in 1969.
And it's a little bit about all the folks here at dKos.
Anderson Cooper, CNN, and my (temporary?) psychosis
Thu Jan 26, 2006 at 09:24:21 PM PDT
This was it, the final straw. All my synapses are burning out. I have cracked open a bottle of Jack Daniels and I am currently polishing it off in huge, desperate, gulps. I can feel a nasty aneurysm developing deep in the base of my skull, pressing ruthlessly on my primitive nerve centers. I am absolutely certain that any minute now my head will explode like a scene from the movie
Scanners. I frantically pray that the whiskey will be able to shut down the processing centers before permanent damage is done to the circuits.
And all of this caused by a salt-and-pepper-haired pretty-boy pseudo-newscaster on CNN.
You see I have been watching the the first 60 minutes of Anderson Cooper 360.
The day I used the "N" word
Mon Jan 16, 2006 at 04:47:42 PM PDT
My confession for MLK day.
It was the 1960's, and I was just a little boy growing up in the Midwest. The area I lived in, and the school I attended, were overwhelmingly white. There were only three black kids in the entire elementary school. One of them, Mike, was one of my best friends.
Mike and I did all the things you would expect of little boys. In the sweltering Midwest summers we would strip off our shirts and play with the garden hose to cool off. We would ride our bikes together, zooming down the hills pretending to be fighter pilots, or astronauts. We climbed trees, played cowboys and indians, and on cool summer evenings we were always up for a game of kick-the-can.
Wild Mustang Slaughter: How You Can Help Save Them
Fri Mar 18, 2005 at 01:07:40 PM PDT
As many of you are aware, the recent Federal Spending Bill that was signed in December contained a rider mandating that the Bureau of Land Management sell off many of the wild mustangs under its control. These wild horses will likely end up as dog food, or be sold overseas for human consumption. This legislation is unconscionable, however it was tacked on to a huge spending bill and got lost in the bureaucracy. I'm sure it would have never passed had it stood on its own.
Nevertheless, until we can get this horrible piece of legislation changed, there is something that you can do to save these wild mustangs.

Earthquake in Iran [Update]
Mon Feb 21, 2005 at 10:47:37 PM PDT
A 6.4 earthquake just hit Iran killing at least 80 people and injuring more than 300 others.
News story here
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer
TEHRAN, Iran - A powerful earthquake shook central Iran on Tuesday, killing at least 80 people, injuring more than 300 and disrupting power to the region, state-run television reported.
Provincial governor Mohammad Ali Karimi was quoted by the TV station as saying that "several villages have been destroyed" by the 6.4-magnitude quake in Kerman province.
So, will the U.S. offer humanitarian assistance here? Will the Bush administration take this opportunity to soften some of the tensions with Iran?
Update [2005-2-22 4:18:7 by bluerevolt]: The loss of life has now risen to at least 175 dead

Feds To Begin Hunting Down Retirees
Mon Feb 14, 2005 at 04:21:55 AM PDT
Want to get even with those damn AARP members? Easy, just use an existing federal program to suspend thier Social Security checks.
From the LA Times
By Sandy Bergo Special to The Times
WASHINGTON - A law enforcement measure that has had mixed results in hunting down fugitives among the nation's sick and disabled is expanding this year to target the much larger ranks of retired Americans.
What the Times is talking about is a little known program called the "Fugitive Felon Project". It was enacted in the mid 90s in order to keep dangerous fugitives from using government money to evade arrest.
The problem is, the project is only right about half the time. And if your grandmother is on the list, she's guilty until proven innocent.

Stop Attacking Bush
Tue Feb 08, 2005 at 03:33:48 PM PDT
Hold on a minute now, before you start throwing eggs at me, read on.
Bush is irrelevant. He is a lame duck. He cannot be re-elected without a change to the constitution. Attacks on him do not serve the best interest of the Democratic Party.
Now, when I say stop attacking Bush, I don't really mean stop attacking Bush. What I am saying is, stop attacking just Bush.
We need to use a tactic from the Republican's playbook on this.

How the Democrats Will Lose on Social Security
Fri Feb 04, 2005 at 04:56:29 PM PDT
Many seem confident that the administration's Social Security plan will fail. While I certainly hope it does, I'm not so sure that is how it will play out. As Democrats we really need to be united on this and not let our guard down. Here's what I am afraid could still happen, and unfortunately it's a losing proposition for the Democrats.
- Bush uses his "political capital" to bring up Social Security reform in his State of the Union address. He talks in general terms and actually outlines no specific plan.
- Democrats respond, opposing Social Security reform. They talk about about how there will be cuts in benefits, how it is gambling with the future, and they question the President's numbers. Some Republicans start to seem a little wishy-washy, and they start to hedge thier rhetoric . The President's plan for Social Security reform appears doomed to failure.
So far so good, right? Well let's not start patting ourselves on the back just yet. Now comes the bad part.

Rep's Sneaky Privatization Agenda? It's NOT Social Security
Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 02:39:05 PM PDT
I am the Great and Powerful Social Security, pay no attention to that $1 trillion behind the curtain.
And you know what Dorothy? While you are not looking, the Wicked Witch of the West Schwarzenegger, along with Grover Norquist and his pack of right-wing flying monkeys, are working to gut $1 trillion in public pension funds nationwide by privatizing them.
Following this yellow brick road has catastrophic consequences for every American. And once we are there, no amount of heel-clicking will get us back to Kansas.

Pelosi & Reid give Prebuttal to Bush's State of the Union
Tue Feb 01, 2005 at 07:29:07 PM PDT
The Senate and House Minority leaders gave a prebuttal to the President's upcoming State of the Union.
The problem is, I saw almost zero press on this. We really have a problem getting our voices heard. If the two leading Democrats in congress can't be heard above the fray, who can? This happened yesterday and I didn't see a thing about it. But hey, that Michael Jackson story is really important to the future of our country, huh?
Anyway, the speeches were given to the National Press Club. The full text of the speeches (as prepared for delivery) are below the fold.

House Dems send letter to Bush
Sat Jan 29, 2005 at 03:47:33 AM PDT
Pelosi and several other house Democrats have asked the President to come clean on the covert propaganda scandal.
From the text of the letter
Dear Mr. President:
We are writing to request that you direct each department and agency of the Executive Branch to disclose to the appropriate Committee of the House of Representatives all public relations and advertising contracts signed during your Administration.
Over the past year, multiple investigations have revealed that federal agencies have employed secret publicity campaigns to promote administration priorities.

Peter Pumpkinhead
Fri Jan 28, 2005 at 06:19:57 PM PDT
I was listening to one of my old XTC albums today and I heard the song "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead".
Just for fun, and since I've got an extra diary to burn, I thought it might be interesting to ask the Kos community who they think is the Democratic Party's "Peter Pumpkinhead". I'm not talking about who is "electable". What I'm looking for is the Dem you think has the guts to stand up for what the party believes in, and is willing to suffer the consequences of making that stand.
So tell me, who is our Peter Pumpkinhead?
